Resident training in inpatient care (including rotations in pediatrics, obstetrics, ER, surgery, etc.) is done at MaineGeneral Health’s regional hospital, the Alfond Center for Health (ACH), located at 35 Medical Center Parkway in Augusta. Featuring “green” design and construction, it includes state-of-the-art inpatient diagnostic and treatment services and comprehensive outpatient care. The four-level, 198-bed hospital prides itself on patient centered care with separate corridors for public foot traffic and patient transport to ensure privacy. All patient rooms are single-occupancy to reduce disease transmission risk; large windows maximize light and nature views to promote healing. The ACH opened its doors in November of 2013.
Our family medicine residents and faculty have a dedicated workspace, and video-teleconferencing equipment allows remote connection from the hospital to our practice sites so those on the inpatient service can easily participate in meetings and didactics.
Other amenities include miles of beautiful outdoor walking trails, a lovely cafeteria with gluten-free options, a café open during transitional hours, and an education pavilion with a comprehensive medical library plus conference and meeting space. The hospital houses the Peter Alfond Prevention and Healthy Living Center which offers classes for community members on nutrition/cooking (in a beautiful on-site teaching kitchen specifically designed for patients and community education), yoga, pilates, meditation, and other healthy lifestyle topics.
