Dr. Joshua D. Sparling is board-certified in dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. After graduating with highest honors and a degree in biochemistry from the College of Sciences at the University of Maine in 1995, he spent one year before medical school in biochemistry basic science research, which culminated in the discovery of a new protein (Insulin Receptor Substrate-4). He received his medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, and later completed his internship and residency in dermatology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Sparling served as the sole dermatologist at the Guthrie Ambulatory Health Clinic in Fort Drum, New York, where he provided surgical and medical dermatology services for all 10th Mountain Division active duty personnel and their dependents. He spent 8 months in South Baghdad, Iraq as the first dermatologist to be sent into combat as a Brigade Surgeon. Upon leaving the Army after 13 years of service, he joined Franklin Health Dermatology, the first ever dermatology-only medical practice in Franklin County. He cared for patients and taught residents there from 2009-2017.
Dr. Sparling joined the faculty of Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and the clinical team at MDFMR Dermatology Services full time in June of 2017. He offers treatment for a full range of dermatological conditions affecting those of all ages, including: acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, dandruff, dermatitis, excess sweating, hair loss, excess hair (hirsutism), and disorders of the mouth, tongue, lips, and nails.
