Pronunciation of Dr. Andrea Abrell
Andrea’s interest in family medicine comes from being raised by parents who instilled a deep appreciation for the balance of nature and an interest in humanities. Andrea was born and raised in or near several national parks, including Yosemite, the Everglades, Acadia, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Maine held a particular affinity for Andrea so she returned here for college, graduating from the College of the Atlantic in 1996 with a degree in human ecology. Between undergraduate and medical school, massage training got her interested in osteopathy. She graduated from the University of New England in 2008. Andrea completed her residency at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in June 2012. She has particular interests in maternal child health and narrative medicine.
Andrea loves living near the Kennebec River and tries to imagine what it must have been like for the midwife Martha Ballard to cross the frozen Kennebec in the middle of the night and the middle of the winter to attend to the women of the area in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Andrea shares her life here with two beautiful daughters, a Mainer husband, a black lab, and a striped cat. She loves reading, a balance between fiction and nonfiction, cooking, going on hikes and walks, writing about medicine and motherhood, and photographing her children and the occasional spiderweb.
